There you have it... built myself a proper website now! After almost 10 years of creating 'websites' (well, mostly web-based software luckily) for others, I finally felt compelled to do it: I basically created this website in order to test and evolve roxbase, my home-grown mini templating "framework" coded in (and for web development in) Common Lisp. The reason is of course that I want to move away from pre-built frameworks such as ASP.NET or Rails to something that I can use with Lisp.
"Hacking"
I'm a fairly recent (May 2008) convert to Lisp, the programmable programming language. After a few days of studying the 'language without a syntax' I gradually fell in love with the beauty of working directly with the compiler's parse tree.
It's not the first time I looked at Lisp. That was in the late 90s when I devoured every single computer programming book I could find at the local library. Lots of mostly old books. I was looking to find a language to get me started. I guess Lisp made about as much sense as C to me back then. I couldn't figure it out. I eventually went with Basic which I could understand and therefore could do something with. I suppose there were smarter 16-year-olds than me around even back then but once I got started I couldn't be stopped and kept learning.
The second time I have looked at Lisp must have been when I was heavily into A.I., sometime between 2001 and 2005. I remember that I somewhat liked what I saw and enjoyed playing with it, but apparently not enough to get to Macros. Otherwise I would have been both scared and hooked right away, I'm sure. But back then, I liked Prolog, too. That doesn't mean I worked in either language long enough to really develop an intimate relationship with it.
Now I'm a Lisper. I will admit that this time around I've been inspired by startup celebrity and essayist Paul Graham, who is probably Lisp's only advocate known to people under 30, to take another look at the language. I'm a big fan of his writing and because he hardly writes an essay without the words "startup" and "Lisp" in it (which is one of the reasons I read them), I kept wondering what I had missed the last time I looked at Lisp.
I don't care too much about the disconnect between "bloated Common Lisp" and "pure Scheme". I'm sure I will use Scheme at some point and try other Lisp implementations, but for now I enjoy being productive with Steel Bank Common Lisp (by virtue of it being merely the first implementation I got to work with Eclipse).
Here's my hacking history:
- From 1999 to 2001: a proficient "imperative coder" (Quick Basic and Visual Basic, and the whole web bundle of PHP or ASP (I used both), JavaScript, VBScript, ActiveX, and Flash),
- since 2002: an "object-oriented developer" (C#, SharePoint and everything .NET in general)
- and since 2008 I am in the process of changing into a "functional programmer" preferably working in Lisp, Python or Ruby.
When talking about the art and science of software development, I use hacking rather than coding or programming. I don't mean to say I'm a computer security expert or a warez cracker—I'm not. Over here, "hacker" and "hacking" mean "programming for the love of it, and out of the office".
My passion for software development is just a function of my fundamental love of human thinking and creation. I have been into philosophy, drawing and making music long before I first encountered computers (which was comparably late). I found that software development isn't a matter of engineering, logic or maths so much as an act of creation and a matter of thinking, originality, design and also expressing one's individuality. I eventually came to suspect that "engineering, logic and maths" rely on the same basic building blocks as well on some level. Whoa! Talk about the human mind at work.
And what is good, Phaedrus, And what is not good... Need we ask anyone to tell us these things?
